Storm damage increases as crops mature
Storms continue to result in light-to-medium damage in most areas, but maturing crops mean significant losses in some cases, according to the Canadian Crop Hail Association. In Alberta, large golf ball-sized hail did significant damage to thousands of acres.
CCHA member companies are investigating 473 claims of crop damage from storms that occurred July 20-26.
“The hailstorm event that happened this past Friday and Saturday will see more significant damages paid as a result of the [crop] recovery element diminishing as we head into August,” said Darryl Tiefenbach, Co-Operative Hail Insurance Company.
Scott McQueen, Palliser Insurance, said that all three provinces are starting to see heavier losses.
“As crops continue to mature, [they] become more susceptible to hail,” he said.
As harvest approaches producers are encouraged to contact their insurance provider prior to harvest to ensure that sufficient representation is left in the field if an adjuster has not yet assessed the damage.
