Large Hail Damages Crops in Some Areas
Heavy rain, strong winds, and large hail damaged crops across the Prairie Provinces, according to the Canadian Crop Hail Association (CCHA).
CCHA member companies are investigating 1,257 claims of crop damage from hailstorms that occurred June 21-28. The majority of the claims were filed in Saskatchewan where farmers saw golf ball-sized hail in some locations.
“We do expect to see some payable losses,” said Darryl Tiefenbach, Co-op Hail Insurance.
Companies contributing to this report are Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, Saskatchewan Municipal Hail Insurance, Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation, Rain and Hail Insurance Services, Co-operative Hail Insurance Company, and Palliser Insurance.
While damage ranged from light to heavy, most crops are still in the early stages of development.
“This provides a strong opportunity for recovery, particularly for cereal crops, which are generally resilient at this stage. With favorable growing conditions in the weeks ahead, many affected fields are expected to recover,” said Scott McQueen, Palliser Insurance.
