Hail Damages Early Season Crops Throughout the Prairie Provinces

Mid-June thunderstorms damaged crops across Western Canada dropping pea- to toonie-sized hail across the area, according to the Canadian Crop Hail Association (CCHA).

CCHA member companies are investigating more than 900 claims of crop damage from hailstorms that occurred June 13-20. The majority of the claims were filed in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Companies contributing to this report are Agriculture Financial Services Corporation, Saskatchewan Municipal Hail Insurance, Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation, Rain and Hail Insurance Services, and Co-operative Hail Insurance Company.

Thankfully most of the crops are in the early stages of development and can likely recover from hail damage,” said Tyson Ryhorchuk, CCHA president. “Most only sustained light to moderate damage from these storms.”
